“Empirical, around for an astonishing 15 years already, are one of the great British contributions to European jazz.”
Join the multi award-winning UK jazz ensemble Empirical for a performance of their album Wonder is the Beginning, released on Whirlwind Recordings in 2024.
Having started their journey in 2007, Empirical make a triumphant return, re-taking their rightful place at the centre of the UK scene, with their first full-length release since 2016.
Wonder is the Beginning is a mature musical statement that shows the band’s fire is still undimmed and their commitment to maintaining the legacy while forging their own unique path is as strong as ever.
Empirical’s trademark combination of complex, thoughtful writing and spontaneous improvisation is enabled by the absolute trust that comes from years of collective music making, and is at the heart of what makes Empirical stand out consistently on the musical landscape.
The performance will feature Nathaniel Facey (alto sax), Tom Farmer (double bass), Shaney Forbes (drums) and Jonny Mansfield (vibraphone).

“Minima are one of the leading bands accompanying silent film in Europe.”
Beneath the sewers of the Paris Opera House dwells a masked figure. He is the Phantom, a hideously disfigured composer whose dream is to turn chorus singer Christine into a diva. Lon Chaney, the “Man of a Thousand Faces”, dominates this classic adaptation of the 1910 novel. His ghastly make-up and outrageous performance made The Phantom of the Opera one of the great classics of American silent film.
This is the original film version of Phantom which inspired numerous remakes. It was a critical and commercial success upon release, as these press quotes from the time contest: an “ultra fantastic melodrama” (New York Times); “produced on a stupendous scale” (Moving Picture World); “probably the greatest inducement to nightmare that has yet been screened” (Variety)
Minima have specialised in live accompaniment to screenings of silent films since 2006. Their electrifying original score for The Phantom of the Opera captures the horror of the story, but also finds pathos, romance and humour. Drums, bass, guitar and cello strike up a thrilling relationship with the film, following the Phantom down into his subterranean nightmare world.
“Minima turned the 1925 Phantom of the Opera into an immersive and gripping emotional experience.”

FRIDAY 10 OCTOBER 2025

6PM-6AM
FitState, in collaboration with Winchester Hospice, is organising a special fundraiser for a cause very close to our hearts. That's right, Zoë Baker and Emma McCaffrey (who lead FitState - outdoor exercise classes for men and women in Winchester) are organising a 12-Hour Fitness Event on Friday, October 10th (6 PM - 6 AM) to raise money for the wonderful Winchester Hospice.
This is in honour of our dear friend Verity, a beloved member of our 'FitState' fitness group. Her passing deeply affected us, and we wanted to find a meaningful way to remember her and support the hospice that cared for her.
Our plan is simple: twelve 45-minute fitness classes with short breaks in between. We're asking for a minimum £10 donation per class, with options to donate more or get sponsored for taking on multiple classes. We have reached out to the Fitness community and created a diverse program of classes and would love for you and your families to get involved in some way. We are so grateful for the support of Noel and Verity's family, who are fully on board with this event. It was vital to us that this felt like a positive and fitting tribute to Verity. This 12-hour event is a chance to celebrate Verity's life, her commitment to fitness, and to raise crucial funds for Winchester Hospice.
Why support Winchester Hospice
Winchester Hospice plays a vital role in our community by providing specialist palliative and end-of-life care to adults living with life-limiting illnesses in Winchester and the surrounding villages. Our mission is to help each patient live their life as fully and comfortably as possible, in a supportive environment that respects their dignity, privacy, and well-being.
By supporting Winchester Hospice, you’re helping to fund essential services such as our inpatient unit, community outreach, psychological support, and complementary therapies—all designed to care for the whole person, not just their illness. We work in close partnership with Hampshire Hospitals, community care teams, and GPs to ensure our patients and their families receive seamless, high-quality care wherever it’s needed most. Your support enables us to continue this crucial work and make a lasting difference in the lives of those facing some of their most difficult moments.
About Verity
We sadly lost Verity in February of this year to cancer. It is a very fitting tribute and way to honour Verity's life, love of community and keeping fit with The Night Shift. Also quite apt with Verity having been a nurse! As her family, we know she would have loved to be part of this not only for the fun, energy and community, but because of the very worthy cause it is supporting. The support and dedication provided by the hospice in Verity's last few months was quite exceptional. They need our support and what better way to do so.

“Jaw-dropping, fulfilling and uplifting.”
‘Ensconced’ is an exciting new collaboration initiated during the pandemic years between leading UK guitarist/composer Ant Law and Milan-born British/Turkish vocalist, composer and lyricist Brigitte Beraha.
The six originals on the album are bookended by re-imaginings of two timeless standards - ‘A Kiss To Build A Dream On’ (made famous by Louis Armstrong) and Bernstein’s ‘Some Other Time’ - in which the duo simply and beautifully conjure up a spellbinding, intimate ‘campfire’ feeling.
Inspired by Ant’s compositions, Brigitte exhibits rich lyrical storytelling, from wistful memories of growing up in the south of France in ‘Who We Are’ to the more obscure tale of a gifted horse in ‘Clever Hans’. Her deeply expressive vocals, alongside Ant’s inventive and melodic acoustic guitar artistry, are the elements at the very heart of this music.
“Rich in bejewelled detail. Ensconced’s subtleties grow deeper with each listen.”

“Promising debut, of striking quality.”
This exciting new quartet - by Bristol-based saxophonist and composer Alex Merritt - brings together four distinctive improvisers, and voices on their respective instruments, to interpret original material of Alex’s that draws inspiration from both classical composers such as Maurice Ravel, Olivier Messiaen and Henri Dutilleux as well as a host of contemporary jazz influences.
The line-up features the wonderful Elliot Galvin on piano (Shabaka Hutchings, Norma Winstone, Marius Neset), Will Harris on bass (The Jazz Defenders, Matt Anderson, Simon Gardner) and Jeremy Stacey on drums (Soft Machine, Jason Rebello, Noel Gallagher.)
This quartet builds on the success of Alex’s former quartet release ‘Anatta’ (2016) a record that featured legendary American drummer Jeff Williams.
Since this time Alex has also released two albums for the prestigious Barcelona-based label Fresh Sound New Talent; ‘Mind-Ear-Ladder’ in a co-led quintet with trumpeter Steve Fishwick (2022) and ‘Common Threads’ with the Fresh Sound Ensemble (2023).
Alex is now relishing the opportunity to get back to the classic quartet format with this brilliant line-up and is excited to bring some new quartet material to The Nutshell as part of a larger nationwide tour ahead of a recording later in 2026.

A Curious Lens - Across Cultures and Continents
A Curious Lens - Across Cultures and Continents
Embark on a visual journey with award-winning photographer Paul Davison. This thought-provoking exhibition showcases 100 striking images that capture the essence of remote and vibrant cultures across the globe. From the ancestral tribes of Uganda to the gritty shipbreaking yards of Bangladesh, and the otherworldly sulphur mines of Indonesia, each photograph offers a window into lives lived far removed from our own. Spanning over 20 countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East, this exhibition takes you to some of the extraordinary corners of our planet and uncovers the beauty, resilience, and diversity of the people living there.

Urinetown, The Musical
book now.
book now.
An exhilarating, not-to-be missed experience…the funniest, most tuneful musical in town.
Multi award-winning Urinetown is a hilarious musical satire of the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, corporate mismanagement, municipal politics and musical theatre itself! Hilariously funny and touchingly honest, Urinetown provides a fresh perspective of one of our greatest art forms.
Urinetown is “a mythical place…a bad place” that exists not too far in the future, where a terrible water shortage caused by a 20 year drought has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The Citizens must use the public facilities controlled by a single malevolent company that profits by charging for the “privilege to pee”. From amongst the downtrodden and desperate people, a hero decides he’s had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom!
Inspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, Mark Hollman and Greg Kotis’s Urinetown is an irreverently darkly humorous satire in which no one is safe from scrutiny. Celebrated for challenging the very notion of what a musical should be, Urinetown catapults the audience into a hilarious romp with its outrageous perspective, wicked wit and non-stop ability to produce gales of unbridled laughter.
A Discarded Nut Youth Theatre production.

Animal Farm
book now.
book now.
“All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.”
DNYT is a cutting edge company of young actors committed to creating breath-taking & high-quality contemporary adaptations of classic plays and stories. This year DNYT explore the timeless themes of power, revolution and corruption as they bring Orwell's chilling 'fairy story' to riotous and devastating life.
When the downtrodden animals of Manor Farm overthrow their master, Mr Jones, and take over the farm themselves, they imagine it is the beginning of a life of freedom and equality. But gradually a cunning, ruthless elite among them, masterminded by the pigs Napoleon and Snowball, starts to take control. Soon the other animals discover that they are not all as equal as they thought, and find themselves hopelessly ensnared as one form of tyranny is replaced with another.
