A Curious Lens - Across Cultures and Continents
Embark on a visual journey with award-winning photographer Paul Davison. This thought-provoking exhibition showcases 100 striking images that capture the essence of remote and vibrant cultures across the globe. From the ancestral tribes of Uganda to the gritty shipbreaking yards of Bangladesh, and the otherworldly sulphur mines of Indonesia, each photograph offers a window into lives lived far removed from our own. Spanning over 20 countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East, this exhibition takes you to some of the extraordinary corners of our planet and uncovers the beauty, resilience, and diversity of the people living there.

“Empirical, around for an astonishing 15 years already, are one of the great British contributions to European jazz.”
Join the multi award-winning UK jazz ensemble Empirical for a performance of their album Wonder is the Beginning, released on Whirlwind Recordings in 2024.
Having started their journey in 2007, Empirical make a triumphant return, re-taking their rightful place at the centre of the UK scene, with their first full-length release since 2016.
Wonder is the Beginning is a mature musical statement that shows the band’s fire is still undimmed and their commitment to maintaining the legacy while forging their own unique path is as strong as ever.
Empirical’s trademark combination of complex, thoughtful writing and spontaneous improvisation is enabled by the absolute trust that comes from years of collective music making, and is at the heart of what makes Empirical stand out consistently on the musical landscape.
The performance will feature Nathaniel Facey (alto sax), Tom Farmer (double bass), Shaney Forbes (drums) and Jonny Mansfield (vibraphone).
“Empirical is still a reliable touchstone of contemporary British jazz at its most sophisticated.”

“Minima are one of the leading bands accompanying silent film in Europe.”
Beneath the sewers of the Paris Opera House dwells a masked figure. He is the Phantom, a hideously disfigured composer whose dream is to turn chorus singer Christine into a diva. Lon Chaney, the “Man of a Thousand Faces”, dominates this classic adaptation of the 1910 novel. His ghastly make-up and outrageous performance made The Phantom of the Opera one of the great classics of American silent film.
This is the original film version of Phantom which inspired numerous remakes. It was a critical and commercial success upon release, as these press quotes from the time contest: an “ultra fantastic melodrama” (New York Times); “produced on a stupendous scale” (Moving Picture World); “probably the greatest inducement to nightmare that has yet been screened” (Variety)
Minima have specialised in live accompaniment to screenings of silent films since 2006. Their electrifying original score for The Phantom of the Opera captures the horror of the story, but also finds pathos, romance and humour. Drums, bass, guitar and cello strike up a thrilling relationship with the film, following the Phantom down into his subterranean nightmare world.
“Minima turned the 1925 Phantom of the Opera into an immersive and gripping emotional experience. ”

“A rollercoaster of emotions, shifting from laugh out loud comedy with slapstick hijinks to deeply moving and personal revelations”
The Zoo That Comes To You follows the impassioned attempts of two animal enthusiasts to share their love of and concern for animals with the world. They take in animals that need respite, care or a temporary home and have, accidentally, ended up with a whole sanctuary, but with no visitors! So everybody – animals and humans alike – have decided it is time to get out, see the world, and bring the zoo, to you.
Come and meet this eclectic group of charming yet cheeky animals, as they discuss their life experiences and the challenges they face in a rapidly changing world. They have a lot to say and want to inspire people of all ages to take action, because they know small actions can make a big difference in the world.
Featuring puppetry, live music and playful characters, Scarlet Oak Theatre welcomes you to join the conversation about animal conservation.
Running time 60mins. Suitable for ages 5+ but we welcome younger audiences and unaccompanied grownups.
“Splendidly synchronised… Jasmine Orchard and Lucia d’Inverno infuse the room with joyful music, silliness and fabulous puppetry.”

Urinetown, The Musical
book now.
book now.
An exhilarating, not-to-be missed experience…the funniest, most tuneful musical in town.
Multi award-winning Urinetown is a hilarious musical satire of the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, corporate mismanagement, municipal politics and musical theatre itself! Hilariously funny and touchingly honest, Urinetown provides a fresh perspective of one of our greatest art forms.
Urinetown is “a mythical place…a bad place” that exists not too far in the future, where a terrible water shortage caused by a 20 year drought has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The Citizens must use the public facilities controlled by a single malevolent company that profits by charging for the “privilege to pee”. From amongst the downtrodden and desperate people, a hero decides he’s had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom!
Inspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, Mark Hollman and Greg Kotis’s Urinetown is an irreverently darkly humorous satire in which no one is safe from scrutiny. Celebrated for challenging the very notion of what a musical should be, Urinetown catapults the audience into a hilarious romp with its outrageous perspective, wicked wit and non-stop ability to produce gales of unbridled laughter.
A Discarded Nut Youth Theatre production.

“All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.”
DNYT is a cutting edge company of young actors committed to creating breath-taking & high-quality contemporary adaptations of classic plays and stories. This year DNYT explore the timeless themes of power, revolution and corruption as they bring Orwell's chilling 'fairy story' to riotous and devastating life.
When the downtrodden animals of Manor Farm overthrow their master, Mr Jones, and take over the farm themselves, they imagine it is the beginning of a life of freedom and equality. But gradually a cunning, ruthless elite among them, masterminded by the pigs Napoleon and Snowball, starts to take control. Soon the other animals discover that they are not all as equal as they thought, and find themselves hopelessly ensnared as one form of tyranny is replaced with another.
